Characteristics of Computer

Following are the important characteristics of a computer:

Speed

Computers work at a very high speed and are much faster than humans. A second is very large time period time for computer. A computer can perform billions of calculations in a second. The time used by a computer to perform an operation is called the processing speed. Computer speed measured in Mega Hertz (MHz) or Giga Hertz (GHz).

Reliability

Computer is very reliable. The electronic components in modern computer rarely break or fail.

Storage

A computer can store large amounts of data permanently. Users can use this data at any time. We can store any type of data in a computer. Text, graphics, pictures, audio and video files can be stored easily. The storage capacity of the computer is increasing rapidly.

Processing

A computer can process the given instructions. It can perform different types of processing like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It can also perform logical functions like comparing two numbers to decide which one is bigger etc.

Accuracy

Accuracy means to provide results without any errors. Computer can process large amounts of data and generate error-free results. A modern computer performs millions of operations in one second without any error.

Recalling

A computer can recall the stored data and information as and when required. The data stored in the computer can be used at a later time. The computer can recall the required data in a few seconds.

Control Sequence

A computer works strictly according to the given instructions. It follows the same sequence of execution that is given in a program.

Consistency

Computer works in a consistent way. It does not lose concentration due to heavy work. It does not become tired or bored. Computer performs all jobs with equal attention.

Communication

Most computers today have the capability to communicate with other computers. We can connect two or more computers by a communication device such as modem. These computers can share data, instruction and information. A collection of connected computers is called network. We can communicate with other people in world via network like Internet.

Versatile

A computer can perform different types of task. We can use a computer in hospital, bank, or at home. We can use it for calculating our budget or can play games. A variety of facilities are available through computers.

No Feelings

Computer has no feelings. It cannot accept feelings as an input. This is actually disadvantage because computer cannot work according to the mood of the user. It cannot be affected by sorrows and happiness like human beings.

No Intelligence

Computer itself is not intelligent. It only follows the given instructions. It uses the intelligence of human beings not its own. If a computer is given a program for addition it cannot perform subtraction by itself.

Cost Reductions

We can perform a difficult task in less time and less cost. For example, we may have to hire many people to handle an office. The same work can be performed by single person with the help of computer. It reduces the cost.
